A Delta’s green building honored as one of exemplary cases in IPCC AR6 for its remarkable energy-saving performance

2022/04/07

The Delta Electronics Foundation hosted the "Climate Salon" to summarize the IPCC's AR6 Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change report for media and the public on 7th April. The building chapter of the report particularly lists "Y.S. Sun Green Building Research Center", donated mostly by founder Mr. Bruce Cheng of Delta Electronics, as one of exemplary cases for its remarkable energy-saving performance. The case is worth reference when the global aims to decarbonize the building sector. A few local experts, including Mr. Tai-Jan Chen, the Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Sciences at National Taiwan University, Mr. Hsien-Te Lun, the Chair Professor of the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University, and Mr. Camyale Chao, the CEO of International Climate Development Institute, were invited to advise on building energy conservation and carbon reduction. One of lead authors of the building chapter, Ms. Yamina Saheb, also shared three key findings in the AR6 with the public through video recording. The salon event attracted nearly 500 viewers during its live streaming on Youtube and Facebook.

Mr. Bruce Cheng, the founder of Delta Electronics, expressed, "Climate change is an unavoidable challenge for human beings. Taiwan, surrounded by the sea, is at the forefront of climate shocks. Recently, all countries in the world are taking action towards carbon neutrality by 2050. The latest IPCC report has taken stock of the currently known technologies and how to achieve the goal of limiting the temperature rise within 1.5°C. Delta has put energy-saving green buildings into practice for many years, and it is our great honor to be included in the AR6 report this year. Y.S. Sun Green Building Research Center was expected to be 65% more energy-efficient than similar buildings, and now its energy-saving ratio reaches 86% under 10-year well maintenance. It confirms that the carbon reduction practice in green buildings is worth further promotion."

Mr. Hsien-Te Lun, the Chair Professor of the Department of Architecture at National Cheng Kung University, said, "Y.S. Sun Green Building Research Center, also known as the "Magic School of Green Technology", successfully used local expertise and technology to achieve excellent performance in energy saving and environmental protection. Next, we expect that the localized "Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)" just issued by the government could be a stimulus to facilitate energy service, as well as a solution to reduce the emissions in the building sector." Mr. Camyale Chao, the CEO of International Climate Development Institute, shared, "The Green BIM Microclimate Database, jointly established by the Delta Electronics Foundation, the Central Weather Bureau, and Taiwan Architecture & Building Center, was applied and helped Shulin Arts and Culture Building in New Taipei City achieve considerable energy savings without replacing energy-consuming equipment. The case displays the carbon reduction potential of climate service."

Ms. Yamina Saheb, the lead author of the building chapter of the IPCC's AR6 Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change report, and who has been advocating emission reduction in the building sector for many years, emphasized, "The building sector will play an important role in the future path to net zero. AR6 report particularly emphasizes the concept of "sufficiency", meaning that through the regulation and guidance of policies, we can avoid excessive use of energy, materials, water and land. The avoidance could further help reduce the carbon emission of the building sector. Moreover, despite different climatic and geographical conditions, net zero energy/carbon buildings are achievable everywhere in the world."

2050 net-zero emissions have become a global consensus. A few days ago, the National Development Council also released Taiwan's 2050 net-zero emissions pathway. In the building sector, governments will strengthen the move toward nearly zero carbon buildings through more stringent policies. From 2006 to 2021, Delta has built 30 green buildings and 2 certified green data centers around the world. In 2020, our 15 certified factories and 5 academic green buildings saved a total of 18.48 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by 11,685 tons. Delta's building automation solutions also keep enhancing energy efficiency and helping mitigate the environmental impact of climate change with the technologies such as the Internet of Things, edge computing, and sensors.
