To receive a positive social return on investment given its size, the Foundation must make the use of resources as focused and strategic as possible. Starting in 2004, the Foundation began setting forth program guidelines to narrow the focus of what it invests in and demands results from.
Programs/Proposals funded or initiated by the Foundation concentrate efforts in the following directions:
Green Enterprise

The founder of our Foundation, Bruce C.H. Cheng, once said: “As a responsible corporate citizen, we must not only be aware of the issues, but also provide solutions.”

Therefore, the Foundation continuously works on bringing the experiences of progressive business minds from abroad to Taiwan. Through this exposure, Taiwan businesses will be able to gradually integrate environmental protection concepts into the core of their business strategy, allowing businesses to realize profitability and foster environmentally sustainable development. Since 2002 the Foundation has sponsored the publishing of “Green Capitalism,” “Green Business Opportunities,” and “From Cradle to Cradle.” In 2005 we invited Rocky Mountain Institute spokesperson Amory B. Lovins to give lectures in Taiwan. Also, in 2008, we took part in organizing Michael Braungart’s lectures in Taiwan.

The Foundation hopes that through the promotion of green industry concepts businesses can effectively implement green capitalism strategies. During the pursuit of earning profits, it is essential that businesses never lose perspective of their obligation to society as a responsible corporate citizen.

Project 1:

Advancement of Green Capitalism

In 1999, a book called “Natural Capitalism—Creating the Next Industrial Revolution” was published in the US. It was the first time such a broad spectrum and depth of examples was provided demonstrating that the barriers between economic development and environmental protection could be taken down and that the business community could play a vital role in promoting environmental protection. The Foundation first sponsored the publication of the Chinese version of this book by Common Wealth Publishing Co. in 2002. Since then we have sponsored many republications of this book and have offered the book as gifts throughout the business community and academic circles with the goal of disseminating the concepts propounded in this book.

On February 7, 2006 the Foundation invited the books author “Hero for the Planet” Amory B. Lovins to visit Taiwan and have discussions with leaders of Taiwan’s business community. He also held a lecture entitled, “Green Capitalism and Industrial Development” at the Business College of National Taiwan University offering Taiwan’s business leaders of the future to experience for themselves Lovins’ illuminating perspectives on how environmental protection can stimulate innovation and allow businesses to profit.

The Foundation currently continues to participate in the “Green Capitalism” Rocky Mountain Institute established National Solutions Council, supporting its long-standing dedication to promoting development of green building and green transportation in the United States and throughout the world.

Project 2:

Cradle to Cradle

Author of “Cradle to Cradle,” Michael Braungart, wrote: “The natural world has no waste.” How can we create a human society that doesn’t produce waste? And how can we manufacture industrial and consumer products that don’t contain toxic materials, and thus won’t harm our health sometime down the road?

He emphasizes the efficient use of safe materials as keys for designing “good” products. The Foundation has sponsored publication of the traditional Chinese translation of “From Cradle to Cradle” hoping to influence the continued promotion of these kinds of design concepts. Our vision is that one fine day these design concepts will take root in Taiwan, one of the world’s major manufacturers of electronics products.
